Hello nikolabronc,

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking how Paramount went about selling their cameras;

It was in the 1980's. Panavision was making their own cameras and renting them to studios. Previously most, if not all, major studios had their own Camera Department to service and maintain their cameras. Although I believe major work was contracted out to people (companies) like Ken Stone and Richard Bennett.

Panavision seems to have convinced the studio that it would be better and cheaper to rent their cameras which Panavision would service and maintain. I also understand that there was a growing problem with the motors of the BNCRs. Those motors were the replacement motors made by, I believe, Fries Company. So Paramount started renting from Panavision and sold all of their BNCRs. I believe most were sold to a single company and later most of those were all sold to collector/dealer Martin Hill of North Carolina.

Funny thing is, Paramount later bought some BNCRs back from Martin for use in filming the TV shows Wings and I think Frazier.

I hope that answers your question.

Mark

Hi Everyone! New member here: Jeff Barklage, s.o.c. DP

I still own several films cameras: Moviecam Compact, Arri 35-3, Mitchell BNCR, Mauer 05, Bolex Rex 5 and Arri 16BL [mostly just for fun now...my current workhorses that bring home the bacon: 2 x Epic Dragons, Red One and BMPC] Full size Worrall, Arri Gearhead, O'Connor 2575C, O'Connor 100, etc.

But my pride and joy is Mitchell BNCR #198, "born" July 1957 to J. Burgi Contner, ASC...used on his TV series NAKED CITY. It was also used on SGT. BILKO and, if my sources are correct, headed back from NYC [where Mr. Contner was stationed] to Paramount, where it shot the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE & I:SPY series.

I have a full set of R-35 mount Super Baltar primes and she runs like a champ! We used her on a film noir short recently and the image created with the Baltars is [of course] terrific! I'll post some behind the scenes stills.

Oh my god! I really can't believe that you own the Mitchell BNCR #198. It was used in Mission Impossible movie. You are very lucky to own this camera. I also own Mauer 05 but it not too cool as Mitchell BNCR #198

Hello Scope235! I own a BNCR that was originally purchased by Paramount. I was told mine worked on the Mission Impossible TV series of the 1960s. I research the history of my cameras. Can I ask how you learned of the Mission Impossible history for your camera?

Thanks and welcome to the website,

Mark

Hi Wilderieds,

#198 is a converted fully functioning BNCR from a BNC. Which would mean the outer door was modified, the inner door also changed to reflex and the rackover was removed.
