Mitchell std vs 2709 lens mounts

Post by Patrick Neary » Mon Oct 25, 2021 10:02 pm

The mitchell standard lens mounts with the 4 screw mounting holes look identical to those on the B&H 2709, are they the same or only slightly different? Anyone know the details and history of those 2 similar mounts?

Hello Partrick, although both Mitchell and B&H 2709 have 4 mounting holes (by the way Mitchell 16mm lenses have 3 holes) they are a different circumference. So, they are not interchangeable. Also 2709 lenses have the little partial circle cut-out to allow it to fit on the turret as it gives room for the center flange that secures the turret. What are you trying to do? Find lenses for a 2709? If so, take note that MANY Mitchell lenses have that little partial circle cut-out so they “fit”, but again, the hole placement will be different. My 2709 actually has 2 sets of mounting holes, one in the original pattern and one in the Mitchell pattern that were obviously added later on the cameras life. Original 2709 lenses are not common.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Thanks for that info! (I just was curious, precious little info out there)
So if I understand correctly, it looks like the Mitchell Std and 2709 have very similar FFDs, and Mitchell lenses fit the 2709 port diameter, but the only real differences are the position of the mounting screws (and cutout for the turret lock)?

Yes Patrick, that pretty much sums it up! I wasn't even thinking about the FFD but that's a good point, i guess it is close enough.

Have used lenses for 2709's on early Mitchell standards with no problems. Focus is within range as marked.
